Western Maryland is a great place for hiking the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian trail passes near Greenbrier State Park near Boonsboro and again at Gathland State Park near Gapland. The scenery is beautiful. Hike around the lake. Explore the interesting rock outcrops and mountain stones in the park.
Green Ridge State Forest, near Flintstone, has 44000 acres to explore. Hike or bike along scenic trails. The trails here are quite challenging.
Big Run State Park in Grantsville has a 6 mile hiking trail. The park closes at sunset.

Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg has over 10 miles of both hiking and biking trails.
C&O Canal National Historical Park in Potomac has hiking and biking trails along the historic towpath. Within the park is the Dierssen Wildlife Management area with more trails. See beavers, waterfowl, forest and marsh areas.
